The 3 Point Shining Star of Le Marche, Italy: San Benedetto
"All Roads Led to Rome"...well, in Rome...all vacationers go to San Benedetto. The Trifecta of Eastern Italian Vacation Spots, San Benedetto captures you...and the only thing you can do? Ask for more!
As a quick intro, I am going to tell you about my experience in San Benedetto and spark your mind to (hopefully) prove me right about this city in Italy by actually going there yourself. First, just a little bit of history about the place:
San Benedetto is actually "San Benedetto del Tronto" as it is known by the locals in the area. Good ole' San Betty is no laughing matter as she is a big girl with 50K people about her. Mama Mia! She is the 2nd biggest city in this region of Le Marche--which means there is "a whole lota stuff to do".
Also, like most Italian cities named after a person, San Benedetto was actually a martyr during Emperor Diocletian's timeframe...you can read all about that stuff on this Wiki Link of San Benedetto.
Let's Dive In.
That's right. Shopping is a really big thing when traveling to Italy...for most people, it's a once-in-a-lifetime-thing. Therefore you must bring back a piece of Italy. The shops in and around San Benedetto are packed with great tourist shops AND local open-market style shopping for the people who live in Italy. You get the best of both worlds.
Even most of the street peddlers who are trying to sell you some knock off pirate junk--their stuff is actually really good! I once bought some Armani Cologne from a street vendor for almost nothing, and it smelled JUST LIKE the real stuff....to the point I think the guy stole the real deal and sold it for pennies on the dollar. --True Story. ==>> This Armani Cologne was the kind I got in Italy.
Shop Til You Drop...or at least Eat!
Now that you have worked up that appetite, GET SOMETHING TO EAT!!
San Benedetto seems to almost be engineered around food for you while you are buzzing about the city! Remember, San Benedetto is a port city (which will be the next point) and they have amazing seafood.
This place has everything from the local street food to very fine dining and everything in between! However, because San Benedetto is a port city--they have amazing seafood. Plus, everything is very very fresh, I'm talking about fish caught literally just a few hours from the time you eat it fresh!
One of the very best foods to get while in San Benedetto: porchetta!
***Little Quick Note:
I did manage to find a very great review for some of the greatest places to eat while in San Benedetto and This is the TripAdvisor Link for the Review.
Most of the time and for most cases a sea port shouldn't even be considered when thinking about a city--unless you are the mayor or so other crazy case. UNLESS you are talking about San Benedetto!
A little mention from above about the seafood. MOST cities and towns must get their seafood off of a iced down truck which has transported fish from the boat at the dock to the restaurant "X" miles away. Which is not completely a bad thing. YET, because San Benedetto has a big port...the fishing boats sell their most recent catch to the restaurant personnel waiting on the docks who walk across the street to their restaurant!! Can you saySan Benedetto Insane!!
Not to Mention:
Pleasure traveling to and from San Benedetto is awesome. Due to the open port, you can book yachts all the way down to a little dinghy and do nothing but cruise the beautiful Adriatic! So if you love "going out and about" while traveling in Italy--make sure you take advantage of the port. --you will hate yourself if you don't!
