I wrote a blog post about how staying in a convent stayed us a ton of money--this post really focuses on the reasons for considering staying at a convent during your trip to Italy.
Every convent is a little different from the next (true with everything) however convents bring a unique travel quality to the common Italian tour: the hotel FEEL with the Bed & Breakfast INTIMACY.
If you are a single person traveling through Italy, convents are a great place to stay on your journey due to the fact that most of the rental rooms are for 1-2 people at a low rate...1-3 nights for just one room are very affordable to most travelers on a budget.
Couple is no different than the above mention traveler. Yet most convents have more rooms than people actually permanently living in the convent. Some convents have entire wings of building set up with dormitory style hallways--this is a goldmine for the travel group!
Nuns devote their lives to service...and taking care of visitors is part of their service as they see it. Therefore, they are flexible in their accommodations and matching needs to the people renting rooms. Good example:
We needed an entire wing of a building for the duration of a stay in Italy. This was a large group of approx 50 people--all college age and LOUD. The area had 2 floors and guys stayed on the lower level while the girls stay on the 2nd floor. I never missed a wake up knock on the door because every single nun had to be up and in the chapel by 5:00am. Their waking earlier really helped us during our stay in Italy, because they ALREADY had breakfast prepared, transportation ready, everything we needed during our stay.
A convent is a best place to stay in Italy for the simple fact they really wish to help YOU enjoy your stay in Italy. That was nice.

I am not one for taking advantage of people so please do not get that idea from this paragraph--that's not my intent.
The nuns who stayed at the convent wanted to help us and made sure they did everything in their power to make sure we had a great trip. When we first arrived to the town of Ripatransone, Italy...the nuns met us at the bus stop with a minivan and actually helped load suitcases into the van. The guys actually had to almost make them stop cause we did that type of stuff, but just the thought of them offering to do the "hard work" to help us meant so much.
Like I talk about in the other blog post about the convent, the nuns bought all the fresh food and cooked it for us when we had scheduled meals with them. A very great amount of Italy is just food....and the nuns at the convent made that special for their guest. Most of the food was simple yet very good, and they stayed with the tradition of having a HUGE lunch on Saturdays and Sundays--I'm talking 8 & 9 course meals!
When you plan your trip to Italy, you don't want to be "mothered", but it is at least a comforting thought to know you have access to people who genuinely care about your experience in Italy.
Location.

Here is the key to everything! LOCATION alone is the main reason why a convent is one of the best places to stay in Italy --by far!
Keep in mind most convents where built many many years ago during a different time frame...like medieval time period. Therefore these buildings doubled as a strongholds against Waring feudal lords...so the peasants could run inside while the knights are soldiers could fight it out. This means the buildings were built in strategic locations in mind. Over time, the rest of the town/village grew into a bigger town and city around the convent. Fighting between feudal lords are long gone, but the convent still remains near the center points of the city. --This gives travelers the ability to stay where the action is within walking distance!
You can find everything you want just a hop, skip and jump down the street!
My Wish.
I hope this blog post at least gives you some new ideas about staying in places in Italy. Italy is a wonderful country where you can make the most of your trip with just a little extra research. A convent might not be for everyone. However, staying at a convent instead of a large hotel will save you money, AND you will have the chance to experience a travel others...just don't.
